Halo2 Launch, NYC

Halo 2 is a first-person shooter video game developed by Bungie Studios and Microsoft. Released for the Xbox video game console on November 9, 2004, the team at Halo2 partners with Samsung Electronics to help launch the game. The first video game is a phenomenal success. Microsoft and Bungie are looking for a repeat. Working with my team in marketing and the people at Microsoft and Bungie, my task is to produce a new Halo 2 video that incorporates the Samsung brand by utilizing the elements that I receive from the two versions of the commercial clips. The output will be 1080i HD (the highest resolution available at the time). After rounds of approval, this clip runs for weeks on a large format Samsung video billboard in Times Square, New York City.

Produced, created and directed by Bobby Barredo. Graphics and footages are provided by Bungie & Microsoft.

Samsung and XBOX360 on MTV

Talk about recycling! XBOX 360— the second video game console produced by Microsoft, and the successor to the Xbox; competes with Sony's PlayStation 3 and Nintendo's Wii— is a recycled video. And yes, this is the video that officially unveils XBOX 360 on MTV on May 12, 2005 during the MTV Music Video Awards. The component is intact and virtually the same as the original video with the exception of the copy and the XBOX360 content that is added to the revolving TV. My role here is to manage the project and work in collaboration with HS Kim, then Sr. Manager for E-commerce at Samsung Electronics; CCA— Samsung's Creative agency— along with a third party production company which produces the original video and does the modification of the new content. Yours truly did the sound design.

Samsung Blu-Ray Launch

Samsung launches the first ever Blu-Ray player, BD-P1000, on June 25, 2006 before an audience of about a hundred media people and top executives from the movie industry at the Samsung Experience in NYC. This is the video that officially introduces the Blu-Ray player in that press event. Blu-Ray technology is the next generation optical disc storage whose primary usege is to play high-definition video upto 1080p. The creation of this video is a bit interesting. With most of the marketing money already been spent, marketing only has money for a recycled video — which, nevertheless, is still going to cost a hefty amount of money (at the time the quote is 35k and will take more than a week to produce). I opt for a totally new video and suggest that to the marketing team. No one thinks it can be done but Peter Weedfald (then Samsung CMO), takes a gamble and gives me the go signal. He, along with Jim Sanduski, then VP of Marketing, and other key individuals craft the messaging. The soundtrack for this video is courtesy of Mr. Weedfald.

Napster Commercial spot

Circuit City partners with Napster to offer music downloads on its e-commerce website. My team in marketing with project owner, Jennifer Merritt, then category marketing manager at Circuit City, heads up to Chicago with Napster to sign-up few celebrated musical talents and wants to utilize the event to market the partnership with an offer of FREE music download for one month to its new subscribers. Addition to that marketing ploy is to giveaway 5 downloadable songs. To get this out to fruition, I set-up a crew that Elizabeth Warren, then director of corporate communications, recommends to film the event. I give direction to the type of HD coverage I need to produce the film. Output is 1080p or 1920x1080 and optimized for IPTV. This is the video that runs in 46,000+ digital screens at all 640+ Circuit City stores nationwide.

Sirius Commercial Spot

The Sirius commercial spot is one of the very first store video projects that I did for Circuit City Store Environment. The studio is yet to be finished. I have already placed an order for most of the equipments I need to set-up through my team's beautiful administrator, Betty Samsford. Construction is still going on. For the time being, I set-up a makeshift studio in my office and produce corporate and store environment videos from there. Working with my own team in the audio video marketing and various other key people like Bob Tarren, then Sr. manager of marketing, and his group; product managers for Sirius, NASCAR and the Richard Petty group; the store environment team; and the very talented producer, Dabney Carr— we put this video together for a loop playback in all 460+ Circuit City stores that equate to more or less 46,000 digital screens all over North America.

Sansa MP3 with Fall Out Boys

Bob Tarren and his team come to me with the Digital Tour project— a Circuit City initiative that partners with old and new talent of musicians such as the WHO's Pete Townshend. Circuit City signs up Sansa MP3 player for partnership to give away one Sansa Connect everyday. The goal is to produce a video clip in HD with the Fall Out Boys band for store environment (this will be the first project that I will do in the now finished audio video facility at Circuit City headquarters in Richmond, VA. (I designed and set-up the AV facility from ground up for a fraction of the cost )).

During this time, I am also closing in on a solution that will deliver dynamic HD content to Circuit City stores. My team and I are competing against retail AV provider such as Cisco and PRN— the world’Äôs most experienced provider of digital media solutions for retail. Peter Weedfald (whom I have worked with at Samsung Electronics and Bigfoot Interactive, a great boss and a dear friend), is then CMO, Marsh Whaling, then SVP of Retail Operations, Mike Palazozolo, then VP of Marketing and other CC key officials watch as I unravel before them the 1080p Digital Ad Network, soon to be equipped with dynamic content engine known as the Advantis Media Player (AMP), my team and I have developed. AMP— a tool that enables IPTV— promises downloads and uploads of files. It schedules and broadcasts dynamic HD content to Circuit City stores nationwide. Not to mention the potential to making more than $20 million of annual revenue through target advertising by utilizing more or less 46,000 digital screens spread across 640+ CC stores nationwide.

STB and DirecTV Placement

Frank Romeo, then VP of Marketing for Set Top Boxes (STB) at Samsung Electronics, and his team come to me with a DirecTV partnership. The goal is to create a high-definition video that will leverage the partnership between STB and DirecTV. The target retail partner is the now defunct CompUSA. As creative director and campaign manager, I manage the audio video facility (that I built from ground up for a fraction of the cost) at Samsung headquarters in North America in Ridgefield Park in New Jersey, I welcome this challenge and opportuity. Though budget is tight, I have all the resources I need in my studio to complete the project.

Samsung New Products at Forbes.com

The Samsung New Products video breaks the ice and finds funding to the construction and creation of the Samsung in-house AV facility in Ridgefield Park, NJ. Peter Weedfald, then Sr. vice-president of marketing and CMO at Samsung Electronics, USA, has a slot of marketing opportunity at Forbes.com. Mr. Weedfald, having worked with him at Bigfoot Interactive prior to joining Samsung, comes to me and asks if we have the capability in-house to do an online video that will run in the technology section at Forbes.com. Of course my answer is yes. I begin to craft what would become the movie and animates it in Flash. In 2001, Flash is a far cry to what it is now. Forbes has to stream the video through Akamai (at the time, Akamai is the ultimate streaming solution). The format required is Quicktime. In the absence of an AV facility at Samsung, I drive home to work at my studio and convert Flash to Quicktime and then optimize for delivery.

Samsung DuoCam Placement at Best Buy

The digital camera department at CE is one of my best clients. As a marketing campaign manager and creative director at Samsung Electronics running the audio and video facility, I get to do a lot of projects with them with their respective retail partners. The DuoCam is a project that I am privileged of working with Jeff Armstrong, then sr. manager for marketing at CE. He comes to me with his idea to push the Duocam product at SEARS. The output is 1080i. The challenge is to produce the HD video with minimal or no cost without sacrificing the impact and quality of the end result. Overtime I have accumulated files of royalty-free stock videos and images from other past projects. Those footages are the saving factor to keep the production cost down.

SportsCam Placement at Best Buy

The digital camera department at CE in Samsung Electronics comes to me with footages of the SportsCam product. The footage has been produced in South Korea to introduce the product at CES in 2005. Again working with Jeff Armstrong and his team, we assemble this product push video, targeting the North American market, to run at Best Buy stores.

SlimFit TV For Sears Stores

The SlimFit project has everything but a budget! Kevin Cahill, then Senior Marketing Manager for Flat TV at Samsung Electronics, comes to me with an idea. The idea is to create a high-definition video that will promote SlimFit TV at hundreds of Sears stores across the country. The challenge: The video has to cost next to nothing while keeping its promise of a good return.
